The sun sets on Lake Roosevelt

I should probably come as no surprise when a photographer says that they love taking pictures.  If they didn’t, why would they be a photographer?  The problem is, that is a very broad reaching statement.  When I say that I love taking pictures, I truly mean it, but what I am trying to say that I love having a camera in my hands and pressing a shutter release button.  For me the joy of photography is the actual act of using my camera, and less the act of processing and posting images.  It is not at all uncommon for me to go out shooting, make a bunch of exposures with every intention of processing and sharing them, to only get distracted by another outing.  This image of the sun setting on Lake Roosevelt in central Arizona is a perfect example.

I took this picture back in July of 2011.  I am actually quite fond of this image, but I didn’t know that I was fond of it until this weekend when I looked at it for the first time.  Truth be told, the only reason it came back up on my “radar” was that I was looking for a sequence of images I made for a time lapse video on that same day.

As a bit of a confession, I probably have 3 or 4 years worth of digital RAW captures that I have never really given much attention to, not that I don’t want to, just that I go out shooting again and they sort of fall out of my apparently short attention span.  As a bit more of a confession, this was no different when I shot film.  I currently have 100+ rolls of exposed, but undeveloped black and white film.

I guess the point of this post is to take what gives you joy out of photography.  Don’t worry if that is something different that what brings joy to someone else.  For me, I love having a camera in my hands and having it do my will when it comes to image making.

I hope you enjoy this image and as always, a larger version is just a click away.
